Overview

Following a product discovery phase at News UK and talkSPORT, I joined a small team focussed on transforming the talkSPORT EDGE app concept into a tangible reality. Despite an older audience demographic, talkSPORT aimed to attract younger users to stay competitive in the dynamic digital landscape, which other brands had already begun to embrace and explore. Working within a dedicated team of 3, we worked to define, design and launch a fresh brand and product that would captivate new audiences and push content boundaries.

Defining the process 

We began the project with some predefined product requirements and partnered with a 3rd party agency for technical delivery, leveraging their expertise in sports data, bookmaker integration and other features which mirrored initial ambitions. Our design process kicked off by establishing the core brand identity for EDGE, which would evolve as the project progressed. To enhance collaboration within our small team, we adopted design sprints, exploring various themes and features. Throughout the project, we conducted user research through questionnaires, surveys, and prototype and beta app testing, gathering valuable insights.

A live feed experience

We defined the app home feed to become a dynamic hub, offering football fans a real-time experience. Users can stay updated on news, uncover exclusive insights, enjoy original content, listen to live commentary and access live scores and data. Working alongside talkSPORT’s dedicated editorial team for EDGE, we strategised and established content templates across various use cases and scenarios for the feed, to ensure seamless fluidity, such as the popular 3pm Saturday slot when UK football matches traditionally kick off.

The product’s defined identity revolves around promoting football data for passionate fanatics. To succeed in a competitive market, we prioritised a feature-rich and user-friendly match centre experience that seamlessly syncs with live data. Our research and iterative design approach resulted in a user experience which gives quick and easy access to crucial match data, as well as comprehensive football statistics for competitions, teams and players. The app's data integration also serves as a valuable resource for informed betting decisions, further engaging users with the product.

Defining content and strategy

While designing talkSPORT EDGE, we also focussed on defining content types that would shape the app experience and establish a distinct brand. Through research, we identified trending content themes and types, and explored opportunities to experiment with content and create app features which uniquely showcased them. Our intention was to leverage some existing content within the News UK umbrella and repackage it, but also create new original content that would build EDGE's playful yet informative personality.

Personalising the experience

Personalisation was a key focus of our work, firstly providing users with the ability to receive customised alerts for the latest breaking news about their favourite teams. This includes match line-up announcements, goals, red cards, and other significant moments. Users can select their preferred teams from a range of leagues, including the Premier League, EFL, SPL, Spanish, Italian, German, and French leagues. As a result, the app experience showcases unique insights from top writers, exclusive pictures and comments which matters most to each individual.

The outcome

We thoroughly researched, iteratively designed and leveraged technical expertise to launch talkSPORT EDGE. The app's features and brand’s content helped to propel it to the forefront of platforms for football enthusiasts. With a user-centric design and intuitive features, EDGE attracted a promising user base after launch, as the inclusion of latest news, live scores and match commentary enhanced user engagement. The app received positive reviews, currently achieving an impressive 4.6/5 rating on the app store. EDGE provides the perfect foundation for talkSPORT to attract new audiences and experiment with content types for future growth.
